Kanha Tiger Reserve

Kanha Tiger Reserve, nestled in the scenic Maikal Hills of Madhya Pradesh, is one of India’s largest and best-maintained national parks. Spanning approximately 940 sq. km., the reserve boasts a rich mosaic of dense sal and bamboo forests, open grasslands, riverine ecosystems, and undulating terrain that make it a breathtaking destination for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

Kanha is particularly renowned for its remarkable conservation success with the hard ground swamp deer, or barasingha, which was brought back from the brink of extinction through focused habitat management and protection efforts.

Flora:
Kanha is dominated by towering sal forests interspersed with stretches of bamboo and lush meadows. During the monsoon, the park transforms into a lush, green paradise, while the dry summer months offer prime wildlife-viewing opportunities.

Fauna:
The reserve is home to an impressive array of wildlife, including Bengal tigers, Indian leopards, sloth bears, wild dogs (dholes), and the hard ground barasingha, a species unique to Kanha. Other frequently spotted species include gaur (Indian bison), sambar, barking deer, jackals, and jungle cats.

Avifauna (Birds):
Kanha supports over 300 bird species, making it a rewarding destination for birders. Notable sightings include crested hawk-eagles, collared scops owls, green bee-eaters, Indian peafowls, black ibises, and a variety of woodpeckers, flycatchers, and warblers.
