This small-group expedition (maximum 6–7 guests per boat) is designed for wildlife lovers, photographers, and conscious travellers.

Guided by Ethical Wildlife’s expert naturalists, this immersive journey offers the perfect balance of wildlife exploration and cultural learning. Visit the Orang Sungai Gallery to understand the river people’s unique connection with nature, and experience the bat exodus at Gomantong Cave.

  • This expedition involves boat cruises and light walking trails, suitable for participants with moderate fitness.
  • Expect tropical humidity with possible rain — lightweight, breathable clothing is recommended.
  • Electricity and Wi-Fi may be limited in remote areas — ideal for a digital detox experience.
  • We do provide wellies for the jungle walks (size EU 32-46 only) and children 17-19.5 cm only.  If your shoe size is not within this range, please bring along good trekking shoes. 
  • Mosquitoes and insects are common; bring repellent and long sleeves for comfort.
  • All activities follow Ethical Wildlife’s “observe, not intrude” principle — minimising impact on animals and supporting local communities.

1 Sandakan → Sukau (Kinabatangan River) Arrival and transfer to lodge. Afternoon river safari to explore Kinabatangan River and its wildlife. Dinner at the riverside restaurant. -
2 Kinabatangan River Early morning river cruise for orangutans, hornbills & proboscis monkeys. Midday jungle walk. Afternoon & night river safaris for nocturnal species. -
3 Kinabatangan River Morning cruise & visit to Orang Sungai cultural gallery. Afternoon river safari or optional Gomantong Cave bat exodus. -
4 Sukau → Sandakan Breakfast & relaxed morning at lodge. Transfer back to Sandakan for onward journey. -
