Himalayan monal

The first time you see a Himalayan monal in good light, it’s difficult to believe the colours are real. The bird turns and suddenly the feathers shift through metallic blue, green and copper. In Chopta, the possibility of an encounter like that is enough to get birders out on a cold mountain trail before sunrise.

Set in Uttarakhand’s Garhwal Himalaya, Chopta is a mountain birding destination of oak forests, rhododendrons, open slopes and high meadows. It’s a place where the walk, the views and the search for birds are all part of the same experience.

“The feathers shift through metallic blue, green and copper.”

Monals, pheasants and mountain forests

Chopta and the surrounding Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary landscape support a range of Himalayan birds. Monals are the headline, but kalij and koklass pheasants, laughingthrushes, woodpeckers, raptors and smaller forest birds all add to the interest, depending on elevation, season and the routes covered.

The habitat changes as you climb. Lower woodland gives way to higher oak and rhododendron forest, then to more open slopes. Those changes are important for birding: different species favour different heights, vegetation and seasons.

Spring can be especially beautiful when rhododendrons flower. Clear winter and autumn days bring a different pleasure—sharp mountain light, long views and birds moving through a quieter landscape.

Why walking makes the difference

Chopta is not a jeep-based wildlife safari. Much of the experience comes from guided walking along suitable forest and mountain trails. The Tungnath approach and surrounding areas are well known, but actual routes must match weather, fitness and any local restrictions.

A good bird guide knows when to stop, listen and scan rather than covering ground quickly. That can make a surprising difference with species that spend only a moment on an exposed branch or meadow edge.

For photographers

There is plenty to practise: birds against dark woodland, high-contrast mountain backgrounds, moving subjects and changing light. A lighter, manageable lens may prove more useful on an uphill walk than the heaviest option in your kit.

When to visit

Spring into early summer and the clearer post-monsoon months can offer different birding opportunities. Conditions vary sharply with altitude and weather.

Getting there

Dehradun, Haridwar and Rishikesh are common starting points for the onward mountain drive. Allow a realistic travel day.

Fitness

Expect walking on uneven ground, with some routes involving significant ascent. Ask for the day-by-day difficulty before booking.

What to pack

Warm layers, sturdy footwear, rain protection, water and weather covers for photography equipment. Temperatures can change quickly even outside winter.

How long

Several full birding days make more sense than arriving one evening and leaving after a single morning.

A different kind of Himalayan wildlife experience

Chopta is about the pleasure of the search: a monal on a meadow edge, a call echoing through rhododendron trees, a raptor above a snow-covered ridge. Few birding destinations combine the subjects and the scenery quite like this.

Do I need trekking experience?

Moderate fitness is useful. Difficulty varies with route, altitude and weather, so choose an itinerary that suits your ability.

No single species can be promised, but monals are a major reason birders visit the area.

Yes. Its pheasants, woodland birds and mountain scenery offer excellent opportunities for varied photographic work.
